The nude has always been a minefield, and the photographic nude especially so. Two of the traditional safety valves have been romanticism and stylization. The first easily degenerates into sentimentality and then near-pornography, while the second easily becomes ugliness. Rosalind Maingot was a good photographer, and she managed to escape both pitfalls, but just barely.
